Wizards just capitalized on another popular non-standard format. After tackling with the beloved Commander format, fans of Modern are also going to get some special treatment.
Principal Product Designer, Mark Heggen, explained in a Twitch stream that heralded the announcement that they often had to abandon cool card designs for fear of imbalancing the environment of Standard. Therefore they made Modern Horizons to fit with the Modern format only. In essence, this set is an opportunity to print a bunch of powerful cards and release them in an already competitive and rich game environment.
Beyond the never-before-released cards, the Modern Horizons set is also said to include some pre-8th edition cards. Longtime fans might recognize a few old favorites from twenty years ago. However, this does not mean that you can also retro-fit any cards from Legacy. The expansion is designed for Legal Modern only.
Modern Horizons is a complete 254 card expansion that is set to release on June 14th. Modern Horizons is designed for Booster Drafting and less so for Sealed Tournaments. The boosters are said to release at $6.99 on Magic Online. As Magic paper products are supposed to no longer release with a recommended sale price, it seems that MTGO will take on this role. Physical pre-release events will take place on the 8th and 9th of June.
